Darlings of the media: Joanne Peh and Dai Yang Tian
Darlings of the media: Joanne Peh and Dai Yang TianWhether you love them or not, nothing can ever go wrong with this politically-correct Media Darling pair
It was no surprise -- for us, at least -- when both Joanne Peh and Dai Yangtian bagged the Media Darling win last night. After all, one's a mass communication savvy grad who knows all the right words to say, and the other's a straightforward no-holds-barred chap who just can't seem to ruffle the media's feathers despite making headlines for all the wrong reasons.
Previous Lux girl now-turned Thank You JetStar ambassador, Joanne, did not strike things off on a good note with the media during her early days as an artiste and was lambasted for her straightforward mannerisms.
The 26-year-old admitted to being "too straightforward back then," in an exclusive interview with xinmsn.
"Maybe I was too young and expressed my thoughts freely. I did not think before speaking and things didn't turn out the way I expected them to. However I am still very grateful for this experience because it has taught me a lot."
Joanne attributed her PR-savvy sense to her NTU Mass Communications background and explained that it "has allowed me to better understand the media's demanding work nature."
"I understand how tough it is when everyone needs to deliver their work. In that sense, I am more willing to cooperate with them [media] and that might be why I won this award," she added.
On the other hand, explaining his belief that "everyone has a role to play and a job to fulfill," co-winner, Yangtian, shared that he usually follows his own "instincts" and is "honest" when it comes to dealing with the media.
With "no regrets" whatsoever on his previous deeds and words, the opinionated one was firm and straight-to-the-point in his answers to the media.
Although it may come across as aloof and overbearing, this Shanghainese lad's honesty and straitlaced ways was strangely, refreshingly delightful.
Sticking to his guns, the media darling said, "I'm the same with everybody. You help me with my work, and I'll help you with yours. You help me complete my work, and similarly, I'll help complete yours."
Need we explain any further?
As we previously said before in our predictions' article, "No one can stop the DYT express."

Jeanette Aw ousts fellow competitors Rui En and Felicia Chin
Jeanette Aw ousts fellow competitors Rui En and Felicia ChinDespite fierce competition from her fellow female (and male) starlets, Jeanette Aw pulls through and comes out tops last night to clinch the Most Favourite Female Character award.
Jeanette Aw's genteel, steely and headstrong character, Yao Jianhong, from megadrama series, Together, proved to be no pushover to Rui En's legion of fans, Felicia Chin's threatening triple nomination (Sun Min in The Ultimatum, Apple Hong in Baby Bonus, and Tao Haitong in Love Blossoms II) and Aunty Lucy's effervescent "so embarrassing" personality.
Although fellow competitor Felicia Chin could not be reached for a comment at press time, Rui En was all cool and smiles on Jeanette's win as she said, "I'm really okay with it. I expected Jeanette to win earlier on."
At an exclusive backstage interview with xinmsn, Jeanette profusely thanked her fans, family, and the production team for "giving me the role of Yao Jianhong."
She openly expressed her "love" for the character and revealed that she was "deeply attracted to Yao Jianhong when I first read the script."
"I never knew that such an ordinary woman exists. Her ordinary qualities could have appealed to viewers, who might be able to relate to it when they think of their mother or grandmother, who were brought up in those times."
"I really love this role of being Yao Jianhong," she ruefully added.
Looking every bit the fashionista with a head-to-toe ensemble from alldressedup and a sleeked back high ponytail, the 31-year-old acknowledged that she faced "tough competition" from the likes of Aunty Lucy and Felicia Chin, and referred to the so-embarrassing former as her "strongest competitor."
In-between chortles of laughter, she said, "Aunty Lucy is definitely my strongest competitor though Felicia is definitely one strong competitor too. She [Felicia] had three roles and 30% was already taken by her! They are both rather strong, and have quite a lot of fans too."
When asked to choose between the Media Darling and Most Favourite Character award, Jeanette expressed her preference over the latter and honestly acknowledged, "I'm not the hot favourite [for the Media Darling award]."
She straightforwardly explained, "I don't mind saying that because I can accept it. Everyone has their own opinions, and it is okay."
"But for this Favourite Female Character award, I acted for the audience and they loved it. This is a form of encouragement to me."
When asked if is she feels confident about running for Best Actress Award next week with this trophy to her name, she coyly remarked, "It has given me a glimmer of hope for the Best Actress award."

Three roles and no award for Felicia Chin but “it's ok”
Three roles and no award for Felicia Chin but “it's ok”
Touted as one of the “strongest competitors” for last week’s Most Favourite Female Character award, Felicia Chin talks about her triple nomination and loss
Felicia Chin pulled a stunner when all three roles for her characters in Love Blossoms (Tao Haitong), The Ultimatum (Sun Min), and Baby Bonus (Apple Hong) were nominated for the Most Favourite Female Character award last week.
Unlike her fellow competitors who faced bouts of merry-go-rounds with their character nominations falling in and out of the listings each week, Felicia's roles held their ground and all three nominations squeezed through the final 10 listing at last Sunday's Star Awards Show 1.
Despite being labeled "the strongest contender" by her fellow competitor, Jeanette Aw, who jokingly lamented at Felicia taking up "30% of the nominations," the triple-nomination princess failed to push through the final bout of voting and eventually lost the award to the latter.
In an exclusive phone interview with xinmsn yesterday, the busy bee who finally got back to us from her packed filming schedule for the upcoming Ch 8 drama series No Limits, sounded perky and upbeat.
"Three roles and no award, it's not a disappointment to me. In fact, it is a big achievement. I really didn't expect it and a lot of effort went into it [the three nominations]. The number is just amazing," she gushed, brushing off talks of disappointment and defeat.
In fact, she takes comfort that the public "really liked all three characters" which summed up her "whole year's achievements." Despite each role being strikingly different from her usual girl-next-door demeanor, the overwhelming polls have further reaffirmed Felicia's confidence and now, she has "little fear in trying roles that are not as well-liked."
The 25-year-old explained, "These characters are not that well-liked -- not as glamorous, not as beautiful (tomboy getup in The Ultimatum) and not as socially-acceptable (single mother in Baby Bonus). These are the pretty daring things I did last year and it has come to a point where I feel that it has been accepted."
Decked out in a frivolous Marc by Marc Jacobs frock for the recent Star Awards Show 1, Felicia appeared unusually tanner with an evident swimsuit tan line showing on her shoulders.
"It's free endorsement for the new show, No Limits, originally known as Splashes and Strings)!" she mischievously chortled before exclaiming, "The makeup artiste got a shock! I am now three to four shades darker! It is to the point whereby I had to change the colour tone of my entire wardrobe!"
Wardrobe issues aside, Felicia jested, "I think I can do the 4 X 100 medley race after this show. I can even be the backup swimmer for the Youth Olympics team! (guffaws)"
With the past three weeks packed with "intensive filming and lots of pool scenes," it seems like this princess is bent on making her swimming practice and effort count in the upcoming Youth Olympics. And to that we say... Game on, Felicia!

Rui En: Don't spend too much voting for me
Rui En: Don't spend too much voting for meThe 'Cool Princess' hopes fans will exercise self-control and won't spend too much money on her
It's common knowledge, but the ice-cool Rui En has made it almost her battle cry these days.
She doesn't care very much for awards.
In an exclusive interview with xinmsn, the actress pleaded with fans to not shell out too much when they vote for her.
On her loss in the Favourite Female Character category last Sunday and being in the running (again) for Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes this weekend, the 29-year-old said, "I just feel for the fans who voted. I don't care much about awards.
"I hope the fans know their limits. Please don't spend too much. I feel guilty."
Voting for Most Popular Artistes are conducted via telepoll which is chargeable; while the online voting for last Sunday's Favourite Female Character was free but fans could only cast a single vote each day.
Famed for her wide fan base despite a nonchalant reputation, Rui En did not feel sorry for the loss but sounded earnest in her reply, "I knew Jeanette Aw would win. She's very popular!"
The sometime singer, who has collaborated with Asian superstar Jay Chou on more than one occasion, is an anomaly in the local acting scene. Despite multiple roles over the years and being regarded as a fine actress, the Hype Records artiste has never been nominated for an acting award.
After wrapping up another leading role in the upcoming Channel 8 drama With You, Rui En yesterday attended the lensing ceremony for the new cop drama Unriddle. Other artistes in attendance included Tay Ping Hui, Chen Liping, Kola Zhou, Joshua Ang, Andie Chen, Priscelia Chan, Paige Chua and Rayson Tan.
In it, she plays police detective Hu Xiaoman, whom she described as "cold-blooded, unfeeling, and like a predator."
The Nanyang Technological University business grad said, "[Xiaoman] believes that to catch ruthless criminals, one has to be ruthless, even if she's a cop."
She added that she herself firmly agrees with the character's attitude to nabbing crooks and thinks in real life police should do all they can too, whatever it takes.
The actress also expressed her delight at the opportunity to star - not for the first time - as a cop.
"Maybe because I didn't play enough when I was young," Rui En, who is an only child of divorced parents, joked, "so now that I can play police-and-thief, I love it."
To prepare for a role that would inevitably require her to get into shape for action scenes, the reigning ice queen has been working out at the gym - for the first time in her life - thrice a week on average.
That's hard to imagine, considering Rui En has always been known for her svelte figure.
She continued, "I started running again. I like running," which brought out a chuckle from this reporter, whose mind travelled back to 2001 when Rui En was talent-spotted as the iconic 'running girl' in a SingTel ad.
Now that Zoe Tay has quit the show citing "personal reasons" but rumoured to be pregnant with her third child, and replaced by another veteran Chen Liping, what are Rui En's thoughts on this?
"[Zoe] made the right choice. She should take care. Go give birth safely. I wish her good health."
Wait, is she spilling the beans on something we don't yet know?
Rui En was quick to correct herself: what she knows is what's reported in the media.
Oops.
Unriddle is tentatively scheduled to air in August on Channel 8.

Jesseca Liu is craving for love
Jesseca Liu is craving for loveTay Ping Hui said he has "always treasured Jesseca," while close friend Elvin Ng was visibly agitated when we brought up news of her departure, before heaping tons of praise on her.
But it seems both leading men of Caldecott Hill don't have what it takes to make actress Jesseca Liu stay.
In an exclusive interview with xinmsn, the poised Malaysian star, who announced last week she would leave the industry after six years when her contract runs out in May, made known her desire to find a man to marry.
She also indicated a need to pay more attention to her business. The 31-year-old currently has a three-year-old spa business in hometown Langkawi, a fledgling blogshop here, and "other businesses that [she] can't reveal yet."
The blogshop in Singapore would mean she'll still be shuttling between the two countries, so fans of Jesseca fret not. She will not be vanishing into thin air just yet.
The former beauty queen spoke to us earnestly after the press conference for her new Ch 8 drama New Beginnings, which is ironically her swansong on local TV. In the heartfelt interview, she said that she would definitely regret if she doesn't leave now.
Quizzed on whether her businesses are more lucrative than her acting career, Jesseca expounded the opposite.
"It's because it's not earning much that's why I'm going back to help!"
Is she in fact running off with some man, following the recent trend of secret marriages?
Giving a bland "No," she added, "I also hope someone wants to marry me!
"Since I couldn't find anyone here, I want to try leaving and see if I can find a man or if anyone dares to pursue me."
Eligible bachelors, start taking note.
Jesseca previously dated Taiwanese actor Wing Fan, 30, after working on the Taiwanese movie Untold Beauty. Their one-year romance fizzled in late 2008.
What are her parting words to her legion of fans, who are bound to have been shocked by the news?
"At this moment I can't organize my thoughts about what to tell them yet. But they're the biggest reason holding me back. They might think I'm abandoning them (at the peak of my career) but I'm not. I'm very sad too.
"I'll be resting for some time but I will never really leave. If there's a good script or something simple (that doesn't take up too much time) I'll be back!"
In New Beginnings, Jesseca plays a wedding gown designer beside two of her real-life closest friends, Ping Hui and Elvin. But they both received different treatments when it came to knowing the news of her departure.
Jesseca confided in Ping Hui on the set because he is "more mature so telling him, he could give me advice."
But Elvin, who worked with her for a full-year on dramas Kinship I and II, found out the way you and I did - from the media.
The 29-year-old said, "I called her and we talked for more than an hour. I told her to give me a clear answer before I'd let her leave!"
She replied, "I wouldn't specially call him and say 'I'm leaving' and ask 'You want to come with me?' (Laughs) If I could drag and hold the news [from him] I would."
Elvin the heartthrob then gushed about his soulmate, "I like her for her class, easy-going nature, for being real, and staying true to who she is all this while."
Ditto. I guess it is safe to say all of us are going to miss Jesseca for those qualities.
New Beginnings debuts 14 Apr, 9pm on Ch 8.
